  • Stage Musical of the Wicker Man planned

The Motion Group have announced their plans for a theatrical musical production of 'The Wicker Man' in collaboration with Robin Hardy and the original film's musical director Gary Carpenter.

    Here's a brief statement:

"Innovative theatre company, The Motion Group, have the rights to stage The Wicker Man in the UK. Working with the 1973 screenplay and music they are adapting the film for the stage with Robin Hardy and Gary Carpenter. They may even use some of the original cast.

The aim is to realise the original film on the stage in as loyal and exciting a way as possible. Artistic director Andrew Steggall believes that in its essence the story is inherently theatrical - being about a ritual as it is, and including so much 'role-playing' and music. This reputable theatre company are looking for support to get the show on and are particularly keen to involve the real Wicker Man fans. For only £100 you could own a piece of the show"

More news on the project will be posted here as and when we have it.

  • The Wicker Man locations up for sale

Are you a cult film fanatic with the best part of two hundred grand burning a hole in your trousers?

The house which served as the filming location for the bedroom scenes in TWM is currently on the market. The upper floor of the townhouse, which can be found at 59 George Street in Whithorn, served as the bedrooms of The Green Man Inn during the film's production. Howie and Alder's bedrooms can be found here as well as the recognizable sunken landing seen in the film.

Previously there had been some confusion as to the locale of Willow's infamous bedroom and to the distinctive L shaped back wall. However, according to our beady eyes, Willow's room was indeed filmed at this house too and not at an entirely separate location as previously thought by fans of the film.

See our Whithorn location report for more details... Whithorn Location Report

The house is currently being sold via AB&A Mathews LLP. Further details on the sale can be found on their website at www.abamatthews.com

  • Wicker Man gathering to be shown on BBC

Our British readers should check out the second series of 'Coast' which is currently running on BBC2 on Thursday evenings. The third episode should be of interest to fans of 'The Wicker Man' as it will feature a report on the TWM weekend in Wigtown from earlier in the year. The episode in question is due to be screened on the 9th of November.

The BBC's website carries an online video stream for the programme but the BBC have been known to block overseas viewers from watching streaming content. The more technically resourceful among you might know ways around this perhaps.

  • The Director's Cut gets a US release

'The Director's Cut' will finally be available on DVD in the USA for the first time in a while. This new release will be a 2 disc set featuring both the 'Theatrical Version' in addition to its longer counterpart. This represents its first North American release since the now-deleted wooden box edition. The set also features the commentary discussion which is included on various European editions of the film. "The Wicker Man – 2 disc set collector's edition" will be available through Anchor Bay from December 19th.

In the interest of confusion, however, it seems that Optimum Video in the UK have released a single disc version of the film mere weeks after releasing their rather definitive double disc set. Anyone who still doesn't have 'The Director's Cut' should know that this new disc merely contains the shorter 'Theatrical Version'.

A general rule of thumb seems to be that if its a 2 DVD set then it has the 'Director's Cut' while the single disc versions do not. Phew.
